BIOGRAPHY

Elisabeth Condon, a second generation Los Angeles native, holds an MFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design. Her paintings have been recognized by the Joan Mitchell and Pollock Krasner Foundations, and a Florida Individual Artist Fellowship. Condon's work is included in the permanent collections of the Hudson River Museum, United States Embassy in Beijing, the Tampa Museum of Art, and Perez Art Museum Miami, as well as private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Condon lives and works between New York, NY and Tampa, FL.

Her public art commissions include Urban Idyll, commissioned by MTA Art & Design Percent for Art for the NYCT Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard Station in Queens, Lattice Views, commissioned by Norte Maar in Brooklyn's Highland Park, Respite, commissioned by Tribeca Film Institute's Storefront Art Recovery Initiative, in cooperation with Hudson Square BID and Trinity Hudson Holdings, and the paintings Verdant Tampa Bay at the Tampa International Airport and Notes on a Lansdcape at  the Judy Genshaft Honors College, University of South Florida.

STATEMENT

My paintings approach landscape as an artificial construction, simultaneously real and imaginary. They scavenge and recombine elements from nature, vintage wallpapers, nightclubs, and Yuan Dynasty scrolls.

In my childhood home, décor doubled as God; flower and lattice wallpapers surrounded and surveilled me. Their plant and lattice patterns portrayed landscape in stylized and abbreviated terms, as scrolls do. My paintings free those same patterns in flows of color, eliminating hierarchies of figure and ground in favor of more subjective forms.

Pours complicate the unfolding of time, while patterns become a personal calligraphy repeated until bodily memorized. The tension between allowing material to be fully itself and wanting to control or organize it yields liquid space that weave in and out of form.
